From mid-June through mid-September, hundreds of whale sharks gather in the deep blue water 30 miles off Isla Mujeres to feed on plankton. A private yacht charter is the most comfortable way to do it: depart Cancun Hotel Zone marinas at sunrise, motor 90 minutes out, swim with the whale sharks in a 2-hour permitted window, then anchor at Playa Norte sandbar for lunch and a swim on the way back.

Frequently asked

Whale Shark Season — FAQ

When is whale shark season in Cancun and Isla Mujeres?

Whale shark season runs mid-June through mid-September every year. Peak month is August. Permits open in mid-May and the first guaranteed sightings start around June 15-20.

How early do we have to leave?

Most whale shark tours depart Hotel Zone marinas between 5:30am and 6:30am. The crossing takes about 90 minutes and the sea is calmest in the early morning. You're usually back at the marina by 2-3pm.

Can I do whale sharks + Isla Mujeres in the same day?

Yes — and most clients do. The standard route is: depart at dawn, whale shark swim 8-10am, motor back to Isla Mujeres for lunch and a snorkel/sandbar stop, return to Cancun by mid-afternoon.

What's included with the whale shark experience?

The yacht charter includes captain, crew, snorkel gear, drinks and snacks. The whale shark transfer is an add-on that includes a permitted guide, life vest, biodegradable sunscreen and the SEMARNAT permit fee. We coordinate everything.

Is it safe for kids?

Children 5 and older can swim with whale sharks under guide supervision. Younger kids stay on the yacht with a parent. The whale sharks are filter feeders — completely harmless. The 90-minute crossing each way is the consideration; book on a flat-calm day for small kids.

What if no whale sharks show up?

Sightings are essentially guaranteed during peak season (July-August). Outside peak, our captain checks reports from boats that left earlier and only commits to the trip if sightings are confirmed. Refund or reschedule policy applies if the trip cannot be completed.
