Sargassum — a brown floating seaweed — can wash onto Cancun and Riviera Maya beaches between May and October, varying year to year and beach to beach. A private yacht charter is one of the only ways to guarantee clear water during a heavy sargassum week: the boat motors out to the leeward (western) side of Isla Mujeres, anchors in the protected sand-bottom channels, and you swim in completely clean water. We tell you honestly when it's arriving and where the clear water is each week.
Sargassum season is roughly May to October, peaking May-August. November to April is essentially sargassum-free.
East-facing beaches: Tulum, Akumal, Playa del Carmen, Cancun south Hotel Zone. Less affected: north Hotel Zone Cancun, Playa Mujeres, leeward side of Isla Mujeres.
The leeward (west) side of Isla Mujeres, El Meco reef and the protected channels off Playa Mujeres stay sargassum-free almost always. A yacht puts you there in 20-30 minutes.
We watch the Sargassum Monitoring Network (Red de Monitoreo) and the captain's morning report. If you ask for a sargassum check the day before, we tell you exactly what your route should be.
Wear swim shoes if you walk on a beach with sargassum (occasional sea-lice and stingers underneath). Sargassum is harmless to swim through but smells when it rots on shore.
Sargassum is a real thing but the Cancun area is bigger than the news clip. The yacht industry continues at full capacity all summer; we just shift routes weekly.

Yes. A yacht charter motors out to the leeward (west) side of Isla Mujeres, El Meco reef or the channels off Playa Mujeres — those spots stay clear almost always because the current sweeps the sargassum east. The water there is crystal-clear all summer.
Swimming through floating sargassum is harmless — it's seaweed, not jellyfish. On the beach itself, sea-lice and tiny stingers sometimes live in the rotting mats, so wear swim shoes if you walk on it. The smell when it rots ashore is the main inconvenience.
May through August in heavy years. June and July are usually the peak. By October it tapers off and November-April is almost completely sargassum-free.
No — the charter goes ahead. The captain simply picks a route that avoids the affected beaches and anchors in clear water. We don't cancel for sargassum; we just shift the itinerary.
By yacht: leeward (west) side of Isla Mujeres, the inner channel at Playa Mujeres, and the protected coves at Inah. By land: Playa Mujeres beaches (north of Cancun), the leeward side of Isla Mujeres, and parts of Holbox.
